If we're honest it's not always easy. In fact, sometimes going on visits is hard work. There's the initial awkwardness thing and then there's the whole language barrier thing. It doesn't take long, however, for all that to change however. Take today's visit for example.
We met Moses last month. He and his family had missed their bus and were making the three-mile trek afoot. We passed them walking down Main Street and stopped to give them a lift. We exchanged phone numbers and although Moses and I had spoken several times on the phone, today was our first opportunity to see them face-to-face. Who has time in this busy, American, holiday....busy existence for visits? The good-intentions are always there but then life happens and it's tomorrow and another days goes by. But not today!
As soon as we entered their home, we were showered with the hospitality and instant friendship given by new Middle Eastern neighbors. Kissed and hugged by all five children, offered water and tea and coffee and cookies. And then came the stories. The sadness of life in Syria. The loss and tears and death they faced daily. Escape to a neighboring country. Giving up wedding jewelry to pay rent and buy bread. Leaving family and friends, with little to no knowledge of their current condition. Coming to this place with no language, no job, no community and relying on the service and care of complete strangers. All of this shared with smiles and laughter. Oh the sweet laughter. Mrs. Moses has the most beautiful laugh. How is this possible? How can a woman who has seen and experienced the worst of humanity still have the ability to smile or laugh?
"I love America. I love the people here and our children's schools and their future. I love America but my heart breaks for Syria, for my mom and dad, for my sick brother. My heart is broken for them." D shared with her that God has a purpose for her life, for the life of her family and that He has brought them her for a reason. Why else would they be here?
As we climbed into the car, all of us were smiling. How could we not? Sweet time with dear people, loving them in His Name, is it's own reward, If we're honest that's why we go visiting. Even when it's hard.
