9November2010 Smells

There are very distinct smells here.  Some of our favorites:
  • Jasmine - There are huge jasmine bushes growing along roads and beside sidewalks throughout town.  Whenever you walk by one the smell captivates you.
  • Coffee  - The smell of beans being ground and grounds being cooked into thick Arabic coffee is very distinct.
  • Falafel - Nothing says, "Good morning!" like driving by a stand where fresh falafel is frying.  If they're brewing tea in mint leaves, even better.
  • Argyle - Water-pipe cafes with their glowing charcoal and fruit-flavored smoke is really nice.
  • Perfume - Perfume souqs are located all about town.  You can walk in and pick out a ready-made perfume or cologne or have the shopkeeper create your own custom blend.
  • Water Fountains - Yeah it sounds weird but on the other side of town this is a beautiful water fountain in the middle of a traffic circle.  Whenever we ride past it you can smell water. Maybe this is a result of living in the desert but even from 100 yards away water has a very distinct aroma..
Smells have been very important in this neck of the woods for a long time.  Check out the phrases  "pleasing aroma" or "sweet savor" in our favorite Book.
