It's funny. The normalcy of life, stuff like going to work, taking kids to school, making meals, bath time, meetings, paying bills, etc., sets in quickly, even here. Something that would have seemed strange to us in the states, like hearing the call to prayer 5 times per day, morphs into the background music of our lives. Unfortunately it often takes something extraordinaire, or maybe something terrible, to shock us out of this status-quo coma.
Tonight it was this view. We had gone to get some photographs of the sunset but clouds covered the sun's descent turning the sky rather lackluster. What rocked me when I looked across the city was the sheer number of apartment buildings and houses, each one representing a person or family, and the green lights, each one representing a mosque. This is the place, our neighborhood, to which we're called to shine.
Take some time today to look around your hood. Inshallah (God willing) you will be jarred from slumber. That's the place you're supposed to be illuminating. Join us in shrugging off the darkness and in not allowing life's busyness to cover our little lights! Blaze brightly, friends, wherever you are!
